Silverman’s decision to go meat-free traces back to a childhood experience that left a lasting impact. During a visit to a turkey farm with her family to choose their Thanksgiving bird, she witnessed the unsettling reality of the meat industry. “I saw a cute [turkey] with a silly walk and cried, ‘Him!’ Before my pointing finger had even dropped to my side, [the farmer] had grabbed the turkey by the neck and slit [the animal’s] throat. Blood and feathers went flying. I had sentenced that turkey to death!” she recalled in a recent interview.
Turkeys, intelligent and social creatures, exhibit complex behaviors in their natural habitat, from caring for their young to foraging for food and roosting high in trees. In stark contrast, the fate of millions of turkeys in the U.S. is grim. Approximately 46 million turkeys are slaughtered for Thanksgiving each year, with the process involving hanging the birds upside down, electrifying baths, throat-slitting, and immersion in scalding-hot water, often while they are still conscious.
Beyond the ethical considerations, Silverman emphasizes the health and environmental benefits of adopting a vegan lifestyle. Going vegan not only spares the lives of nearly 200 animals annually but also contributes to a reduced carbon footprint. Additionally, individuals who choose a plant-based diet lower their risks of developing heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and other health ailments.
