Mercy For Animals has shed light on the harsh reality faced by turkeys in the nation’s top turkey-producing state, Minnesota. Their undercover investigation exposes the routine cruelty these birds endure throughout their lives in the meat industry. The shocking footage captures the grim and unnatural life cycle of turkeys raised for meat, compelling Americans to reconsider their holiday feasts.

The investigator’s footage reveals horrors that consumers rarely witness. Turkeys are subjected to unnatural conditions, crammed by the thousands into windowless warehouses. Disturbing scenes include baby turkeys left in piles, struggling for breath under the weight of the deceased. Many turkeys suffer from painful infections, injuries, and wounds without receiving proper veterinary care.
The footage documents baby birds in distress, experiencing sudden cardiac arrest or being unable to right themselves, known as “flip-overs.” Chicks are caught in electrical wires, resulting in electrocution or burns. Birds are roughly handled, kicked, and shoved onto conveyor belts leading to slaughterhouses, where they face further brutality.
According to AJ Albrecht, managing director of Mercy For Animals, the investigation findings highlight a systemic acceptance of blatant animal cruelty in the industry. The documented practices are not isolated incidents but rather considered standard, emphasizing the urgent need for change.
The investigators reported severely injured or dying birds to the manager multiple times, yet the conditions persisted. Drafty barns over 60 years old, open-flame heaters, and freezing temperatures resulted in baby turkeys getting stuck in gaps and freezing to death.
Walter Sanchez-Suarez, an animal behavior and welfare scientist at Mercy For Animals, emphasizes that the majority of turkeys in the United States experience poor welfare throughout their shortened lives. Bred for rapid growth, these animals are prone to serious health problems, and farmed in intensive systems that prioritize profits over their behavioral needs.
Factory farming is a major contributor to animal suffering, impacting the lives of the 80 billion land animals killed for food annually. Turkeys, bred for rapid growth, suffer from organ failure, heart attacks, and debilitating pain, often collapsing under their own weight. The unnatural breeding practices employed by industrial agriculture shorten the natural lifespan of turkeys from 10 years to just a few weeks.
As more than 45 million turkeys face brutal slaughter for Thanksgiving, it is crucial to acknowledge the changing landscape of consumer choices. National turkey consumption has declined over the past 25 years, with an increasing number of consumers opting for plant-based alternatives. This shift reflects a growing awareness of the ethical and environmental consequences of the meat industry.
In light of these revelations, Mercy For Animals and One Green Planet encourage consumers to choose compassion by opting for plant-based foods this and every holiday season. With an array of delicious ready-made plant-based roasts available, celebrating a cruelty-free Thanksgiving has never been easier. For those inclined to culinary adventures, homemade plant-based “turkey” options like seitan roasts offer a flavorful and ethical alternative.
