Families in Moama, New South Wales, have been told that their discolored water won’t return to normal for weeks. Authorities are insisting that it is fine to drink.
“We haven’t been drinking it either, but when the water looks like this in the bathroom, we don’t really want to wash in it either,” Beck Angel, from Moama, wrote on Facebook.
Some people have been forced to purchase and drink bottled water, but this doesn’t solve the problem and is creating more plastic waste.
Resident Sarah Dixon told 7News that she has been forced to take her 13-week-old baby to her parent’s house for baths to avoid bathing the child in the brown liquid.
“It literally looked like straight river water,” she said.
“Being a nurse I know what little parasites can lurk in the water so I was not risking the chance.”
According to the Murray River Council, floodwaters from rivers have been affecting the filtered water supply.

“While the filtered water is discolored, it is not harmful and the filtered water quality is within the requirements of the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines,” a council spokesperson told the ABC.
“Due to the discoloration, the following may occur; toilet u-bends may look a little murky, bath water may look dirty, white sheets and clothes may not stay white when washed.”
Everyone should have a right to clean drinking water. Climate change leads to extreme weather like droughts, floods, and fires. The single BEST thing you can do to fight Climate change is to stop eating meat and all animal products. Growing animals for livestock takes a massive amount of water. It takes nearly 660 gallons of water to make just one burger, which is equivalent to nearly two months of showering for the average person. On the other hand, it takes 1,000 gallons of water to make just one gallon of cow milk.
Studies have shown that eating more plant-based can add over a decade to your lifespan, it can save the world’s forests, it benefits the environment, and it is significantly better for your health! Nations around the world have urged people to eat more plant-based to curb climate change.
