Ingestion of and entanglement in marine debris are the two main threats that our waste poses to marine animals. Sadly, both are unavoidable for ocean dwellers who are faced with the overwhelming and inescapable amount of waste that is being dumped into their habitats. For bigger animals, like seals and sea lions, abandoned fishing nets and lines are among the most dangerous types of debris.
The unfortunate seal in this video by the Hillswick Wildlife Sanctuary found themselves completely tangled in a lobster line. Thankfully, the animal was found by a crew who did everything they could to help. The rescue proved challenging – the line was wrapped around the seal’s neck so tightly that the animal had difficulty breathing. But, happily, the rescuers managed to cut if off in time and the seal was free!
Fortunately, due to the help of the rescuers, this incident ended in a success and a saving of a life. But every day, marine animals are threatened and lose their lives because of marine waste – a part of which is to blame on the unsustainable and cruel fishing practices.
