Last week, Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar won her primary after a well-financed challenge from local lawyer Antone Melton-Meaux.
Melton-Meaux had received extensive financial Support, raising six times as much as Rep. Omar in the second quarter of 2020, and he received the endorsement of The Star Tribune, the largest newspaper in Minnesota. Still, Rep. Omar won almost 60% of the vote.
Heading into the primary, Rep. Omar was backed by prominent leaders like House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), and Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.).
In Minnesota, we know that organized people will always beat organized money.
Tonight, our movement didn’t just win. We earned a mandate for change. Despite outside efforts to defeat us, we once again broke turnout records.
Despite the attacks, our Support has only grown.

In 2018, Rep. Omar made history as the first Somali American to be elected and was the first of two Muslim women elected to Congress.
She gained national prominence for going toe-to-toe with President Trump after he said she and other progressive Democrats should “go back” to where they came from. She also made headlines after being accused of anti-Semitism by Republicans and Democrats over her comments on social media for which she has apologized.
Her primary win ensures a clean sweep of re-election primaries for the group of first-term Democratic congresswomen of color known as the “Squad.”
Reps. Omar, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), and Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) won their primaries, and Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-MA) is running unopposed both in her primary and in November’s general election. All will likely return to Washington, representing the new progressive voice of the Democratic party.
“It’s not an accident that Ilhan and I had primary challengers. Because when you speak truth to power, power fights back,” wrote Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, according to The Nation.
