Humans have a terribly unhealthy relationship with animals. Between the circuses, zoos, breeding mills, the illegal wildlife trade, and a dozen other cruel practices, it is abundantly clear that most humans have little to no respect for the animals they coexist with. And sadly, all of the activities that humans partake in which harm animals, are carried out for selfish reasons. We bulldoze entire forests just to get some palm oil for our snacks or make space for more livestock, we keep animals captive in zoos and circuses simply for our entertainment, and we breed “purebred” animals because we have decided that for some reason or another, these types of animals are more valuable.
Sadly, because of all of these terrible practices, baby animals enter a world that is frankly, atrocious. Custard is a two-week-old foal that was taken in by Edgar’s Mission Sanctuary after her mother was ripped away to play mother to another foal who, unlike Custard, was thoroughbred. Now she is orphaned and will have to either be raised alone or under a mother who is not her own.
“It’s so sad that we do these things to animals just because we can,” said Pam Ahern, founder of Edgar’s Mission, between tears. Despite the countless rescues Ahern has witnessed over the years, she remains to be touched by these animals’ stories and brought to tears by the injustice they endure. Ahern remains optimistic for the future hoping that through awareness, the way we treat animals will eventually change. We sure hope so.
