Pope Francis emphasized the need for a “decisive acceleration of energy transition” from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources. He called for a shift away from dependence on fossil fuels and towards sustainable alternatives. The Pope’s words carry significant weight, as they underscore the moral imperative of transitioning to clean energy to protect the planet and future generations.
While recognizing the promise of technologies designed to capture and store carbon emissions, Pope Francis cautioned against an overreliance on such technical solutions. He likened it to “pushing a snowball down a hill,” highlighting the risk of relying solely on technical fixes without addressing the root causes of Climate change. Additionally, Pope Francis did not mince words when warning that the world is approaching a “point of no return.” He expressed concern that the responses to the climate crisis thus far have been inadequate, leading to the deterioration of the world we live in.
The Pope also expressed Support for climate activists who have often been labeled as ‘radicalized.’ He argued that these activists are filling a void left by society as a whole and should be seen as exercising a healthy form of pressure. The Pope recognizes the vital role these activists play in pushing for change and holding those in power accountable.
Looking ahead to the COP28 climate summit, scheduled to take place in Dubai, Pope Francis expressed hope that it would serve as a turning point. He acknowledged the unique role of the United Arab Emirates, a significant oil producer, and called for substantial changes, beyond mere appearances. He hopes that the summit will accelerate the global transition to renewable energy and demonstrate the seriousness of efforts since the 1992 Earth Summit.
Pope Francis’s “Laudate Deum” is a powerful call to action on Climate change. It is a reminder of the moral duty we all share to protect the planet and future generations. The Pope’s words carry weight beyond the Catholic community, urging the world and all nations to take decisive steps to combat Climate change. His message is a plea for humanity to choose life and embrace sustainability over self-destructive practices.

LAUDATO SI’: In one list of the care for creation, there is only one that even mentions animals. The rest concerns humans, especially embryos (of course). The Pope may talk about animals and caring for them only as practice for caring more about humans since we have “one heart”. There is nothing in Laudato Si’ where he says factory farming, its extensions, and slaughterhouses ought to be closed down, or trophy hunting, bull fighting and rodeos should be abolished, and humanity should switch to sustainable AND HUMANE plant-based diets. The Pope never says that animal “abuse” (an understatement) is a sin. .
