Leaving a dog alone in a parked car is extremely dangerous and can lead to death. In summer, temperatures inside a car can rise quickly, causing heatstroke and even boiling a pet alive. In winter, pets risk freezing to death. Yet, in 19 U.S. states and Washington, D.C., it is still legal to leave pets unattended in cars. This must end.
Studies show that within just 10 minutes, the temperature inside a parked car can increase by 20°F (11°C), even with a window cracked open. Even if the car is running, there’s always a risk of the air conditioning or heating shutting off, leaving your pet in danger.
Climate change is making heatwaves longer and more intense, which means the danger to pets is worsening. Some states have already made it legal to rescue pets from hot cars, but 20 areas still lack protections.
