Plenty of state governments, and plenty of individuals, continue acting irresponsibly about Covid. Texas Governor Greg Abbott is at the top of the list. In March, he announced that the state would return to business as usual. But the pandemic is far from over. And Texas has one of the highest death rates, which the Houston Chronicle estimates at 280 per day.
A big part of the problem is certainly that nearly half of the U.S. population remains unvaccinated, and getting vaccinated is a necessary condition to thwarting the pandemic. But vaccinations alone are insufficient. Vaccines are safe and effective, but they lose their efficacy over time: especially the Pfizer and Johnson & Johnson vaccines, which most vaccinated citizens have received. So vaccinations are not a license to ignore easy and necessary precautions like wearing masks to grocery stores.
At a bare minimum, all states should acknowledge the rising Covid rates and ensure that minimal precautions are in place. You can sign this Texas-specific petition asking the state to be responsible about the ongoing pandemic.
