In a pioneering move that merges environmental awareness with the cinematic world, the nonprofit group Good Energy, in collaboration with Matthew Schneider-Mayerson from Colby College, has introduced a groundbreaking tool for assessing climate change representation in movies. Dubbed the “Climate Reality Check,” this innovative test draws inspiration from the famous Bechdel test, originally a measure for women’s representation in film, to shine a spotlight on how Climate change is depicted in Hollywood productions.

The Climate Reality Check operates on a simple yet profound premise: it evaluates whether a film acknowledges the existence of climate change and if at least one character is portrayed as being aware of it. This tool is not just for filmmakers and screenwriters; it’s also a lens for audiences to gauge if their environmental realities are reflected on the big screen and for researchers to track the evolution of Climate change portrayal in the film industry over time.
The urgency of integrating climate awareness into all sectors, including entertainment, cannot be overstated. Good Energy’s initiative has already made waves, with their analysis of 13 films nominated for Academy Awards this year revealing that only three passed the test: “Barbie,” “Nyad,” and “Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One.” Each of these films incorporates elements of climate awareness, from direct references to Global warming to critiques of consumerism’s impact on the planet.
The Climate Reality Check sets a new benchmark for storytelling in an era of environmental crisis. It challenges creators to infuse their narratives with a consciousness of the world’s climate challenges, ensuring that the stories told are not just captivating but also reflective of the critical issues facing our planet. As Hollywood continues to wield significant influence over global culture, the introduction of the Climate Reality Check heralds a hopeful step towards more environmentally conscious filmmaking, encouraging a deeper engagement with the pressing issue of climate change.
