Pupils having lunch in classroom.

Lunchtime at a Queens high school just got a lot louder, and in the best possible way. According to reporting from Gothamist, the smartphone ban at Benjamin N Cardozo High School has transformed silent lunch tables into lively gatherings where students are reconnecting with each other and rediscovering simple joys that do not involve screens. The shift is not just social. It is helping the school environment feel healthier and more grounded at a time when digital overload is affecting the minds and wellbeing of young people across the country.

Instead of scrolling through feeds, students now crowd around tables playing Jenga, chess, and other board games that faculty donated to help ease the transition. For many teens, it is their first time trying them and they are finding it surprisingly fun. Teachers say the ban has boosted classroom focus and created a calmer atmosphere. A recent survey from the New York State United Teachers union showed that 89 percent of school staff noticed improvements in the school environment and more students engaging with lessons. A national study from the University of Pennsylvania also supports the idea that limiting phone use helps kids stay present.

Students are reading physical books again, talking more, and creating real friendships instead of defaulting to social media. Some teens admit they miss the convenience of phones, but even the skeptics agree that conversations and community feel stronger. The school reports fewer late arrivals to class and fewer hallway traffic jams now that everyone is looking up instead of down.

A phone free school day might sound small, but it shows what can happen when we create environments that center human connection and mental health. When young people feel grounded, the entire community benefits, including the Earth. More connection means more awareness and more people who care about building a better world. Small changes create ripples. Choose plant-based habits in your own life and Support more spaces that nurture wellbeing and compassion.
