A new report by the Changing Markets Foundation sheds light on the tactics used by some of the largest meat and dairy companies to influence climate policy and public perception. The investigation highlights how these industries manipulate regulations and mislead the public, echoing strategies previously used by the tobacco and fossil fuel sectors.
The report examines 22 major companies, including JBS and Nestlé, revealing their strategies to delay climate action. Through revolving doors and privileged access, these corporations exert significant influence over policymakers, effectively blocking efforts to monitor and regulate emissions.
A controversial methane metric, GWP*, is used to downplay the environmental impact of livestock. Funded scientists promote this metric, falsely suggesting that minor methane reductions make the industry climate-neutral. This manipulation is part of a broader greenwashing effort, where companies project an image of sustainability without taking substantial action.
With Gen Z showing a preference for plant-based diets, the meat and dairy industries have intensified their marketing efforts. Campaigns on social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram falsely promote meat and dairy as sustainable choices, despite evidence to the contrary.
Despite contributing significantly to global emissions, only a fraction of these companies have set net-zero targets and those that have largely focused on less impactful areas. The report highlights the minimal investment in genuine low-carbon solutions compared to the funds spent on advertising and lobbying.
The report also documents how these industries have derailed environmental policies in regions like the EU and New Zealand. Their lobbying efforts have led to weak regulatory frameworks that prioritize industry interests over meaningful climate action.
