New Jersey Driver Charged With Animal Cruelty After Killing Seven Geese

A tragic case in Spotswood, New Jersey, has led to animal cruelty charges after a car struck and killed a flock of geese earlier this summer. The deadly collision happened on July 14 near the lake along Devoe Avenue, where seven geese were found dead in the roadway. The driver fled the scene before authorities arrived.

According to ABC7NY, police launched a months-long investigation, reviewing surveillance footage and interviewing witnesses. On September 12, Spotswood Police announced that a suspect had been identified and charged with seven counts of animal cruelty. Additional charges include violations of New Jersey Fish and Wildlife Regulations, as well as motor vehicle summonses.

Police Chief Philip Corbisiero praised the Support of the New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife and the Monroe Township Police Department, noting their role in helping secure the charges. He emphasised that the case demonstrates the department’s commitment to protecting both people and wildlife.

Geese are federally protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, making any intentional harm a potential violation of state and federal law. The protection is vital, as these birds play an important role in local ecosystems, even when their presence in suburban areas creates conflict.

The case highlights the importance of holding individuals accountable for cruelty against animals. Too often, wild creatures suffer at the hands of reckless human behaviour.
