Nearly ten years after the Paris Agreement, the world is still falling short on climate action, and the latest UN warning makes that painfully clear. According to the UN Environment Programme Emissions Gap Report, recently updated national climate pledges have barely shifted the trajectory of Global warming. While projections have improved slightly, the planet is still headed toward 2.3 to 2.5 degrees Celsius of warming this century, far beyond what scientists say is safe for the Earth and human health.
The report looks at Nationally Determined Contributions, the climate plans countries submit every five years. Fewer than a third of governments filed updated plans for the latest round, and even those changes did little to curb rising greenhouse gas emissions. Methodological changes and policy shifts explain much of the small improvement, not stronger climate ambition. That means communities, wildlife, and fragile ecosystems remain exposed to escalating risks, from heat waves and drought to food insecurity and displacement.
UNEP warns that keeping warming near 1.5 degrees would require emissions cuts of up to 55 percent by 2035 compared with 2019 levels. That is a steep challenge, but the report stresses it is still possible. Proven solutions already exist, including rapid expansion of wind and solar power, cuts to methane Pollution, and protection of forests and oceans that store carbon and Support animals and biodiversity across the planet.
UN Secretary General António Guterres called the findings clear and uncompromising. Every fraction of a degree matters, he said, because lower warming reduces damage to the environment, protects public health, and lessens harm to the most vulnerable people on the planet. The transition away from fossil fuels can also bring cleaner air, better jobs, and stronger energy security for people and ecosystems alike.
This moment calls for urgency and honesty. Governments must match words with action, and people can help by supporting climate solutions, choosing more plant based meals, and pushing leaders to protect our shared future. Let us keep pressure on and choose a path that respects the Earth and all who depend on it.
