The Netherlands is getting ready for a quieter New Year. Lawmakers have approved a nationwide ban on the sale of consumer fireworks starting in 2026. According to Euronews, the measure cleared both the House of Representatives and the Senate after years of public debate. Supporters say it will also ease pressure on emergency crews and reduce chaotic street scenes.

For many people, the biggest reason is simple compassion. Fireworks can be terrifying for animals. The blasts and flashes often leave pets shaking, bolting, or hurting themselves while trying to hide. Farmers also report stress and injuries among livestock. Meanwhile, wildlife can abandon nests, crash into fences, or flee into traffic.

There is also a public health angle. Every New Year’s Eve, emergency rooms treat burns and eye injuries. Hand trauma is common too. Fireworks smoke can irritate lungs, especially for kids and older adults. The noise can also trigger panic for people with anxiety or sensory issues. Smoke and fine particles can linger in cold air. That matters in dense cities. After the noise fades, streets are left with ash and litter that can wash into waterways. This is a reminder that the environment is shared. On Earth, small choices add up.

Of course, people still want to celebrate. The ban does not have to mean a boring night. Cities can invest in professional displays, lasers, or drone shows that keep the magic. Local councils can also expand quiet zones and public events, so neighborhoods are not pushed into an arms race of noise.

If you want a kinder holiday, lean into traditions that cause less harm. Make your table more plant based and share a simple vegan spread with friends. Then Support community celebrations that protect animals and the air we all breathe.
