Finding an apartment should not mean losing the family dog. Yet in Greater Boston, that is the choice many renters face. Carlie Hruban adopted Cal after he arrived at a shelter underweight and injured. In Baltimore, her landlord welcomed multiple pets. But when graduate school brought her to Massachusetts, she spent months searching and paid thousands in broker and move in costs just to secure a lease.
According to Boston Globe reporter Lindsay Crudele, housing pressure now pushes more than a third of MSPCA shelter occupancy, and over 3,000 animals arrived because people could not find stable housing in the 2.5 years before May 2025. That is heartbreaking for families and rough on shelters that already stretch budgets for rescues and disasters. For many, that bond supports mental health, especially during moves and job changes.
So the MSPCA launched Action for Pet Inclusive Housing and backed two bills now before state lawmakers. The proposals aim to curb breed bans in public housing and condo rules, limit pet fees, and protect older residents who rely on animal companionship. They also seek clearer rules for emergency shelters, so people do not have to choose between safety and their pets.
Still, the market can look welcoming until you add filters. One search site dropped from thousands of listings to just dozens when renters selected dog friendly. Some landlords even demand dog DNA tests, even though a 2024 study found one test could lean more on a photo than the swab.
Fair rules can help renters stay housed, keep pets out of shelters, and reduce wasteful churn that strains our communities and the environment. If you Support a kinder, more vegan and plant based future, speak up for housing policies that keep families and their pets together.
