A Texas mariner is proving that heroism isn’t just for humans—it extends to sea turtles, too. Captain Brandon Upton, a commercial mariner and owner of Sea Tow in Corpus Christi, has dedicated the past seven years to rescuing cold-stunned turtles after first spotting them in 2018. According to Good News Network, Upton was out in the Gulf of Mexico when he noticed dark shapes floating in the water. To his shock, they were sea turtles, completely motionless.
Cold-stunning occurs when water temperatures drop below 56°F, causing sea turtles’ bodies to shut down, leaving them helpless against predators, boats, and strong currents. Instead of ignoring the problem, Upton acted quickly, reaching out to experts at San Padre Island National Seashore, who confirmed the phenomenon. Since then, he has made it his mission to patrol for distressed turtles every winter, using his airboat to ferry them to safety.
Upton’s efforts have saved countless turtles, as he hauls them to shore, where they are rehabilitated before being released back into the wild. His work is a testament to the impact individuals can have on marine conservation. Despite lacking formal training in sea turtle rescue, his deep respect for animals has driven him to step up when it matters most.
The Gulf of Mexico’s delicate ecosystem depends on people like Upton, but it also depends on all of us. If one man can make such a difference, imagine what could happen if more people took action. Support marine Conservation groups, reduce plastic waste, and advocate for stronger protections for sea life. Every choice we make impacts the ocean and the creatures that call it home.
