Stefan Ivanov, a 52-year-old banker from Bulgaria, and his 21-year-old son Maxim, rowed across the Arctic Ocean, hoping to set a new world record. The duo completed the journey in September after 33 grueling days at sea, during which they faced powerful winds and unpredictable currents.

Their voyage began in Haugesund, Norway, at the southern edge of the Arctic Ocean, with the goal of becoming the first team to row across the entire ocean. Stefan’s son Maxim, a student at Stanford University, joined the expedition partway through after finishing an internship in New York. Together, they navigated the icy waters in a boat they had built themselves, fittingly named Neverest — a play on words signifying their relentless pursuit of challenging goals.

Stefan likened the journey to being “in a washing machine for weeks,” as the harsh ocean conditions constantly tested their resilience. Despite these challenges, the father and son pushed forward, determined not just to accomplish the physical feat, but also to bring attention to a cause close to their hearts: protecting endangered marine species. Their efforts supported a petition to establish new protected areas in the Southern Ocean to safeguard marine biodiversity.

Maxim, who at 16 had already made headlines as the youngest rower to cross the Atlantic with his father, reflected on the deeper significance of their journey. “Journeys like this are reminder that even the small victories are victories and when the time gets tough every single step is a step forward no matter how small.”
