Sharks are some of the most misunderstood creatures on the planet. We have been trained to fear sharks and taught that they are a ruthless, bloodthirsty species that targets human beings. Because of this, we have made sharks the enemy and systematically set out to quell the shark population. But when you look at the comparison between how many humans are killed by sharks per year and the number of sharks killed by humans, it seems that the real enemy is, in fact, us.
Every year, 100 million sharks are pulled from the oceans and slaughtered for their fins, meat or simply as part of an organized cull. As apex predators, sharks play a vital role in keeping the marine ecosystem balanced and we are quickly seeing what a devastating impact the loss of sharks is having on our oceans – and consequently, us.
Madison Stewart is determined to change this, however. At 21-years-old, Stewart has spent more time in the oceans with sharks than most people double her age. She has seen first hand what our vendetta against sharksis doing to the marine population in the past 10 years alone and now she’s fighting back. Sharks need a protector, they have survived five periods of mass extinction on Earth, but are now gravely endangered because of humans. The fact is, humans need sharks, so it is far past time that we stopped fearing them and starting saving them.
