When a wildfire strikes and chaos reigns, animals are, all too often, the forgotten victims. Ali Crumpacker, director of the Fund for Animals Wildlife Center (FAWC) gives this poignant account of what can happen when a disorientated animal is caught up in the middle of such a disaster: “Obstacles send them reeling back to the flames until they settle on a direction to travel, while trying to run the border between human-cultivated land and the burning wilderness. By the time they stop, if they have made it out all, the animals are dehydrated and exhausted. Many have smoke inhalation issues and some will have burns.”
Luckily, the stray cat in this video – named Cinder by rescuers – was saved when a wildfire ripped through her area in Cotati, California. She is currently receiving treatment at the Animal Hospital of Cotati, where staff are changing the bandages on her singed paws every day and administering medication to help keep her calm and pain-free. She will also require surgery on her ears soon, as the tips of them were significantly damaged in the fire.
Cinder appears to be recovering well from her ordeal … and judging by her loving temperament she displays in this clip, she is sure to have no end of admirers offering to give her a forever home, when the time is right! Get well soon, sweet girl.
