Where there’s smoke there’s fire … and sadly, in this video, also a baby vervet monkey. What could have been a potentially tragic situation was made a positive one by dauntless explorer and former British Army paratrooper Levinson Wood, who was on a 4,250 mile trek following the River Nile from Rwanda to Egypt. When you’re on a journey, you never know what you might encounter and, in this case, Levy encountered a chance to save a baby animal’s life.
In a certain part of Uganda, Levy came across a section of African bush that had been bulldozed and set aflame, with the wildlife being left to fend for themselves. After seeing a monkey family huddled together, luckily Levy spotted little Florence, who was chirping like a scared little bird. She seemed immediately comfortable with him, crawling all over him, using his head as a pillow. He was able to make sure she got to a wildlife sanctuary, but she looked like she wanted to stay with him! What could be a better part of an adventure than to save a baby animal’s life?
While we wish that little Florence never had to be taken from the her wild home and brought to a sanctuary due to human destruction, we are pleased to know that she will be given a fighting chance at life – and the opportunity to return to the wild if her rehabilitation goes well.
Remember, if you ever come across an injured wild animal, it is always best to contact a professional wildlife rehabilitator before taking actions to help the animal. Click here for a listing of hotlines you can call in the event of an emergency.
