The Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai volcano in the Pacific Ocean erupted earlier this year and broke numerous records. The Washington Post reported that the eruption reportedly sent as much as 4 million metric tons of water vapor into space, according to Larry Paxton, a scientist at Johns Hopkins.

The eruption in January was so explosive that water vapor from the explosion touched space. This was a first-of-its-kind observation from a volcano on earth, and the event even produced the greatest concentration of lightning that was ever detected. The eruption released so much energy that it disturbed a layer of the Earth’s atmosphere.
At a recent news conference at the American Geophysical Union’s fall meeting, experts described the event as a once-in-a-lifetime observation. Scientists believe that the volcano could continue to break records as they study more about the infamous explosion.
The earth can do some pretty amazing things!
