As the Bok Nal summer season draws near in South Korea, rescue organizations have been scrambling to save as many dogs (and cats) as possible. The season which spans from mid-July to mid-August this year is the time of year in South Korea in which the consumption of dog meat reaches an all-time high.
Humane Society International (HSI) recently helped a dog meat farmer transition to farming parsley, saving 50 dogs from a brutal slaughter. Other rescue organizations, even those in the U.S., are also doing their part to transform the lives of these innocent victims. The New York Bully Crew (NYBC) was contacted after a dog breeding and slaughter operation was recently discovered housing more than 100 dogs.
The rescue has committed to caring for fifteen of these dogs who were living in heartbreaking conditions. As seen in the video footage, even before these dogs undergo barbaric torture to be eaten, they suffer in disgusting, filthy, unsanitary “farms” such as this one. From puppies, nursing babies, sick dogs, and cats, there are countless animals in need of care. While organizations like HSI work on location, rescues like New York Bully Crew then give the dogs a safe place to recover and eventually, get adopted. As you can imagine, before these dogs can be adopted out they have to receive much-needed medical care. This is where animal lovers like you can get involved and help transform the lives of these innocent animals.
NYBC reports that it will cost anywhere from $1,000-$1,200 to get each dog medical care and initial boarding. Some of the dogs are positive for heartworm, which will cost around $1,500 per dog for heartworm treatment. Keep in mind, this is all before the cost of airfare to get them to the U.S. Clearly, even after being rescued, these dogs still have a long road to recovery, but we can all do our part to make that road a little smoother, a little more comfortable, and a little less scary.
