The Hyatt Hotel chain is joining other groups in removing travel-sized plastic toiletries from its hotels. The company announced November 12 they would be replacing all travels-size bottles with larger plastic ones that can be refilled and reused as needed.

Beginning June 2021, all 220,000 rooms in the chain will have bulk sized bottles instead of travel-sized. Hyatt operates 900 hotels around the world within 20 brands.

Hyatt’s director of environmental affairs Marie Fukudome said of the change, “This is a topic that more and more customers and guests and the public in general are paying attention to. There will be more plastic in the ocean than marine life by 2050.There’s certainly a sense of urgency, and we are seeing that our guests are looking for these types of solutions.”

Hyatt has a broad sustainability program and this latest move is part of the company’s goal to, as said in their press release, “reduce disposables and select environmentally preferable options whenever possible.” The company is also increased the number of fresh water stations in its lobbies and making bottled water available upon request at meetings and events. The company removed straws and drink picks in September 2018.

Marriott International and InterContinental Hotels Group said earlier this year they would be removing travel-size bottles from hotels as well. California passed a law recently that will ban travel-size toiletries in hotel rooms in the state.
