Another business has committed to reducing its plastic. Unilever committed to halving its new plastic use by 2025, according to CNN. Unilever makes products like Ben & Jerry’s and Dove. The goal would reduce plastic from 772,000 to 386,000 tons in 2025.

To meet this target, Unilever will switch to reusable or refillable packaging, and sell more unwrapped products. The company also said they would use more recycled plastic in their packaging. The company is also participating in an initiative called Loop, a service that allows consumers to reuse and refill items.

The company also pledged to collect and process more plastic packaging than it sells. This commitment means the company must collect about 662,000 tonnes of plastic each year. As part of this, Unilever will partner with waste collection agencies and purchase recycled plastic.

As plastic continues to pile up in landfills and be produced at higher rates annually, it is important that companies make these pledges to reduce. Estimates say that there will be more plastic than fish in the ocean by 2050. Unilever estimates that 2.5 billion people use their products on an daily basis. That’s a lot of plastic.

Alan Jope, Unilever CEO, said in a statement about the company’s goals, “Our starting point has to be design, reducing the amount of plastic we use, and then making sure that what we do use increasingly comes from recycled sources. We are also committed to ensuring all our plastic packaging is reusable, recyclable or compostable. This demands a fundamental rethink in our approach to our packaging and products. It requires us to introduce new and innovative packaging materials and scale up new business models, like re-use and re-fill formats, at an unprecedented speed and intensity.”

Unilever has been working on plastic packaging since 2017, as part of its ‘Less, Better, No” setup.
