A group of fishermen recorded video footage of these humpback whales eating lunch during an excursion out on the water, and just about got swallowed in their boat.

Humpback whales, who feed on zooplankton and other small fish, often travel to the New England coast to eat their fill. Their journey to the East Coast of the United States begins a little further south, in the Caribbean, where they spend months at time fasting in the warm waters where food is not as plentiful.

A shortage of food in southern regions of the globe isn’t the only problem humpback whales face, however. The dangers of increased oil and gas production offshore, more regions of the world where humans generate noise underwater, and the threat of whaling once again coming to the forefront are some of the worst problems that humpback whales are up against in the modern world.

While it might seem the like the obstacles are too much for us to help these poor whales, there is something we can all do to help. Writing to our political representatives to support marine-friendly legislation, starting awareness campaigns at home and participating in demonstrations against underwater sonar testing can help to give these gentle giants some relief from all the burdens we place on this majestic and incredible species.
