House cats are more adventurous than many of us realize, stalking small creatures and sometimes bringing them home as “gifts.” Unfortunately, this sense of feline curiosity now has a new and worrying dimension: cases of H5N1, commonly called bird flu, have been confirmed in a growing number of domestic cats in the U.S. While cats have been known to carry diseases from their outdoor expeditions, this virus is grabbing attention because it can pose health risks for both pets and people.
According to a recent ABC News article by Sarah Boden, more than 80 domestic cats have tested positive for bird flu since 2022. Experts like virologist Angela Rasmussen emphasize that even though cat-to-human transmission hasn’t been documented in this current outbreak, close contact with pets means owners should remain alert. Simple precautions, such as avoiding raw or unpasteurized pet foods and keeping cats indoors, can go a long way in reducing the chance of infection. Veterinarian Michael Q. Bailey also points out that cat owners should watch for symptoms like runny noses, eye discharge, dizziness, or seizures, since H5N1 can affect the respiratory and nervous systems.
The good news is that H5N1 has yet to mutate into a virus that readily passes between people. However, scientists warn that viruses constantly evolve, so the more often animals become infected, the greater the odds of possible reassortments or changes that could make it easier to spread among humans. While the risk remains low, paying attention to your cat’s outdoor habits and feeding practices can help keep households healthier.
Now is the perfect time to take action. Switch to safer food options for your cats, ensure they’re vaccinated where possible, and consider limiting their outdoor adventures to supervised strolls. Each step not only protects your beloved feline but also guards your family, your community, and the wildlife around you.
