Life for homeless dogs is incredibly difficult. In the U.S., there are approximately 70 million stray dogs and cats, who are in need of a loving home. Only a fraction of these animals will ever find their way into the shelter system, and even fewer will be adopted. The odds are seemingly stacked against homeless animals in the U.S., and tragically, in Greece, the situation is even worse.

In the wake of the Greek financial crisis, the number of homeless dogs in the country has skyrocketed. With the population struggling to make ends meet, caring for a pet is an added burden many can’t bear. Thankfully, there are a number of rescue organization that have stepped up to help stray animals in Greece, one of them being Save a Greek Stray.

This video features the rescue of Evita, a starving pup who was suffering from mange as well as leishmaniasis and ehrlichia, infections transmitted by ticks. Although she came to the sanctuary in horrible shape, with a little love and the proper medication she made a full recovery!

Seeing her transformation is sure to bring a smile to your face! To learn more about Save a Greek Stray, visit their website and Facebook page.
