For millions of Americans, paying for health care now means cutting back on the basics. According to the West Health Gallup Center on Healthcare in America, about one third of adults said they reduced at least one daily living expense just to keep up with medical bills. That adds up to more than 82 million people.

Those tradeoffs are harsh and deeply revealing. Some people are skipping meals. Others are lowering the heat, driving less, or borrowing money. In many homes, health care is no longer just another bill. Instead, it is the bill shaping every other decision.

One of the clearest examples in the report is a retired librarian in Illinois who found that Medicare covered less than she expected. As a result, she passed on orthopedic inserts that could ease her pain and searched for discounts on medicine her plan would not cover. She also said she sometimes skips lunch and stretches out prescriptions to save money. That is not a system working as it should.

What stands out most is that this crisis is not limited to uninsured people or the very poor. Even middle class households are being forced to make the same painful choices. At the same time, many Americans are delaying surgery, retirement, and home buying because care costs too much. When people cannot afford treatment, their health often gets worse, and the wider environment of daily life becomes more unstable too.

A fairer country would not force people to choose between medicine and food. Caring for people, animals, and the planet means backing systems that make healthy living more possible, including more affordable care and a more compassionate, plant based future.
