Hamsters Delay Flight in Unusual Airport Incident

A TAP Air Portugal flight faced an unusual delay after more than 130 hamsters escaped their carriers at Ponta Delgada Airport in the Azores. The hamsters, part of a shipment that included ferrets and birds intended for sale at a local pet shop, and likely experiencing a tremendous amount of stress, chewed through their cages, causing chaos aboard the Airbus 320.

The rodents scattered throughout the aircraft, hiding in small spaces and sparking concern over potential damage to critical components like electrical wiring. Baggage handlers and airport staff launched an extensive search to recover the runaway hamsters before the plane could safely return to Lisbon.

It took four days of determined effort to round up the small stowaways, but the airline eventually regained control of the situation. Similar incidents have been reported with other animals disrupting flights, including rats and even swarms of insects. However, few have matched the scale of this hamster invasion, which grounded the aircraft far longer than anyone expected.
