Last Chance for Animals Launches Campaign Urging Pet Stores to Stop Selling Hamsters and Small Animals

Last Chance for Animals (LCA), a prominent international Animal rights group, is igniting a campaign following an extensive undercover investigation. Their mission: to urge major pet retailers, including PetSmart, Petland, and Petco, to cease the sale of hamsters and other small animals in their stores. The investigation conducted by LCA has unearthed distressing revelations about the conditions these animals endure within the commercial small-animal breeding industry.

The investigation exposed the grim reality of commercial small-animal breeding mills, which operate similarly to notorious puppy mills. These facilities churn out tens of thousands of hamsters annually, subjecting them to unimaginable horrors. Hamsters bred in these mills often find their way into pet stores, perpetuating a cycle of suffering.

Exclusive footage obtained by LCA during their investigation reveals the appalling conditions hamsters endure.  They saw hamsters confined to small, overcrowded, and soiled cages with minimal shavings, depriving them of the opportunity to engage in natural behaviors such as burrowing. Hamsters were displaying signs of extreme mental distress, evidenced by repetitive behaviors like pacing within their cages. Additionally, sick, injured, over-bred, and deemed “ugly” hamsters are being disposed of callously.

Hamsters are not commodities but sensitive and intelligent animals with complex care needs. They are frequently purchased as “starter pets” for children, yet the reality of their origin is often obscured from consumers. The small-animal mill industry exists solely to meet the demand for mass quantities of animals, disregarding their welfare in the process.

Chris DeRose, the founder and president of LCA, emphasized the importance of their investigation in shedding light on this issue and sparking a dialogue about the commercial small-animal industry. “We hope our investigation will shine a light on this issue and ignite a conversation about the commercial small-animal industry,” DeRose stated. “We urge PetSmart, Petland, and Petco to stop selling hamsters and other small animals. Remember when it comes to animals, ‘Adopt Don’t Shop!'”
