American Airlines Relaxes Pet Policy for Flights!

American Airlines recently announced a significant update to its pet policy, bringing relief to pet parents who frequently travel with their furry companions. The airline has relaxed its restrictions, now permitting travelers to bring a full-size carry-on in addition to their pet carrier.

Under the revised policy, passengers flying with American Airlines can now bring one pet carrier as a carry-on, provided they pay the designated pet fee. The pet must remain in the carrier throughout the flight and be placed under the seat in front of the owner. Additionally, travelers are allowed to bring one additional item on board along with the pet, such as a personal item like a purse or small handbag, or a carry-on bag that fits in the overhead bin, subject to the airline’s requirements. It’s important to note that passengers can only bring one additional item alongside their pet carrier, not both.

Previously, travelers with pets were limited to a small personal item that could fit under the seat if they chose to bring their pet onboard. Larger items, like carry-on bags, were required to be checked for a fee of $35. Alternatively, pet owners had the option to place their pets in the cargo hold if they wished to bring larger items with them. However, the fee for bringing a pet onboard remains unchanged at $150, as specified on the American Airlines website. Additionally, pet strollers are still required to be checked, and all standard checked bag fees apply.

Despite the relaxation in policy, experts advise pet parents to engage in thoughtful planning and research before traveling with their pets. Factors such as choosing a pet-friendly airline, securing appropriate insurance, and preparing pets for the journey are essential considerations. It’s also crucial for travelers to familiarize themselves with each airline’s specific guidelines for traveling with pets, as policies may vary between carriers.

Travelers should be aware of country-based restrictions that apply when traveling abroad with pets. Understanding the pet-entry requirements for the destination country is imperative to ensure a smooth and hassle-free travel experience.
