Gen Z is Spearheading the Fight Against Climate Change

Climate change is undeniably one of the most pressing issues of our time, and the youth, particularly Gen Z, are fervently stepping up to combat it. Their mantra? “Climate change shouldn’t be our problem, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t be the solution.”

Take, for instance, Zanagee Artis, who left a position at Goldman Sachs to co-found a climate nonprofit, or the young activists in Montana who recently scored a significant victory in court. For the first time in the US, a judge deemed it unconstitutional for the state to overlook climate change while sanctioning fossil fuel projects. This youth-driven wave is not limited to Montana; similar legal battles are being fought by young activists around the world.

The youth’s approach is multi-faceted: legal action, social media campaigns, protests, and more. When quizzed about their role in addressing Climate change, teenagers from various schools voiced an array of solutions. Their ideas ranged from grassroots efforts like recycling and using public transport to bigger moves like voting for environmentally conscious leaders and holding big corporations accountable.

However, the overarching sentiment remains: while they’re hopeful and determined to tackle the issue, there’s a palpable resentment. Why? Because they feel burdened with a problem they didn’t create. As one student insightfully mentioned, “We are of the Earth; we owe it to ourselves and every being that makes up this world.”

But amid the challenges, the resilience of Gen Z shines through. Whether it’s through expressing the need to dispel the myths surrounding nuclear energy, emphasizing the power of voting, or advocating for sustainable transport options, their unified voice is loud and clear.

To address Climate change effectively, it’s imperative to tap into the energy and commitment of the youth. As they so rightly put it, while it may not have been their problem to start with, they’re determined to be part of the solution. After all, the responsibility of caring for our planet shouldn’t fall on just one generation—it’s a collective effort.
