Although Hurricane Harvey is no longer front page news, the aftermath of the disaster is far from over. There has been much media coverage featuring the people and land animals that have been affected by the recent hurricanes, but marine life has also been suffering tremendously from the storms.
A petition on Care2 states that the dolphins of Galveston Bay have been found with lesions on their bodies, are malnourished, and many have disappeared from their fishing grounds after the hurricane. Scientists have been researching the causes of all this and have agreed that pollution from petrochemical companies is a leading cause of the dolphins’ demise.
The petition explains that in the wake of Hurricane Harvey, ExxonMobil, Valero Energy, and Arkema spilled massive amounts of Pollution into the Houston Ship Channel and Galveston Bay, releasing hazardous toxic chemicals that have been poisoning marine life, including those dolphins and the fish they rely on to survive.
The petition’s author wants these three companies to be held accountable for their actions and set up a fund for dolphin research and recovery. If you agree that these corporations must take responsibility for their harmful Pollution, please take a moment to sign the petition.
As Hurricane Harvey fades into the background in the media, these dolphins will be forgotten, so please make sure to share this with your network to increase awareness and Support for this serious cause.
