Moving can be a stressful experience for any person out there, but for our furry family members, the experience can be nothing short of panic-inducing. Even if we plan and prepare for months in advance and offer unconditional reassurance, pets often don’t understand why their cozy homes are suddenly transforming into a sea of boxes. The bottom line is that moving with pets can be tough but far from impossible – and the result is usually positive.

Take, for example, the heartwarming story of a dog featured in a TikTok video posted by user @bbybentley. This pup’s confusion was palpable as he watched his familiar surroundings vanish. His eyes reflected his nervousness and sense of defeat as his once comfortable space was stripped away.

But this seemingly bleak story takes a different and more positive turn after a five-hour drive. After arriving at his destination, the dog got a good look at his new digs and their anxiety seemed to melt away and in turn, pure delight surfaced. He realized this new place wasn’t just different – it was better. The happiness on his face as he wagged his tail and explored his new digs was a sight that could melt anyone’s heart.

“He was very anxious the whole car ride,” the owner shared with Newsweek via TikTok. “But once he realized we were all moving to this new place, he was so happy, tail wagging, running around. It was great.” To help him settle in, they made sure to walk around the neighborhood, allowing him to get familiar with his new territory.

Moving, whether it’s just down the block or across the country, is inherently stressful for animal companions because they may not know what’s going on as it happens like we do. They don’t get a heads-up that big changes are going to happen quickly. But fear not – there are ways to ease the transition for your four-legged family members.

The American Humane Society offers some invaluable tips to help make moving day as stress-free as possible for your pets:

  • Pre-move Preparations: Ensure your pet has a collar and ID tags with up-to-date contact information. Check their microchip details as well.
  • Vet Visit: Consult your vet about feeding recommendations and get prescriptions if your pet tends to get car sick.
  • Pet-Friendly Accommodations: Plan your route and reserve pet-friendly hotels or accommodations if you’re traveling long-distance.
  • Moving Day Logistics: On the big day, keep your pet in a secure location like a crate or a closed room until you’re ready to transport them.
  • Safe Transport: Use a secure, well-ventilated pet carrier for smaller animals. For larger dogs, ensure they are leashed or harnessed.
  • Frequent Breaks: During long drives, make regular stops to allow your pet to relieve themselves, eat, and drink.

By following these tips, you can help your pet feel more secure during the upheaval of moving. Remember, while the move might be stressful, the reward of seeing your pet happy in their new home makes it all worthwhile.
