Hooting chimpanzee, pan troglodytes, in the tropical rainforest of Kibale National Park, western Uganda. The park conservation programme means that some troupes are habituated for human contact.

Full of life and curiosity, chimpanzee Lisa Marie now spends her days perched in oak trees, exploring her family’s three-acre island at the accredited Save the Chimps sanctuary in Fort Pierce, Florida. At 18 years old, she climbs, plays, and bonds with her best friends Jaybee and Ariel—living freely as nature intended.

Her path to freedom was anything but easy. Born at the notorious Missouri Primate Foundation, a breeding facility later shut down after a PETA lawsuit, Lisa Marie was torn from her mother shortly after birth. Instead of growing up in a nurturing troop, she was sold to an Elvis impersonator in Chicago, paraded on a leash, forced to perform in traveling shows, and often locked in a tiny basement cage with a padlocked collar around her neck.

Public outcry helped turn her story around. In 2009, PETA enlisted Lisa Marie Presley to call for the chimpanzee’s release. By 2015, thanks to a generous supporter, rescuers finally brought her to Save the Chimps. Arriving malnourished and frail, she soon blossomed with care, eventually joining other chimpanzees to form lasting bonds and rediscover her natural instincts.

Today, Lisa Marie is thriving—whether showing off her unique two-fisted corn-eating technique or simply enjoying the sunlit freedom she was once denied. Her story is a powerful reminder that animals used for roadside zoos, circuses, and other cruel attractions suffer deeply, yet can heal and flourish when given sanctuary.

Every animal is someone, deserving peace, dignity, and the chance to live naturally. Lisa Marie’s transformation shows what’s possible when compassion wins over exploitation.

We can honor her journey by speaking out against facilities that imprison and exploit wildlife for entertainment. Support true sanctuaries, adopt plant-based values, and help build a kinder world where no being is treated like a prop.
