desperate and depression

According to PETA, notorious animal exploiter Tonia Haddix—dubbed the “Chimp Crazy” villain on HBO’s Chimp Crazy—has finally been sentenced to prison. After pleading guilty to two counts of perjury and one of obstructing justice, Haddix received 46 months behind bars, three years of supervised release, and was ordered to pay PETA’s fee award.

Haddix first came to PETA’s attention in 2018 when she took over the Missouri Primate Foundation, a now-defunct breeding facility in Festus, Missouri, where chimpanzees were kept in appalling conditions—filthy cages, surrounded by waste and pests. A court-ordered rescue saw seven chimpanzees transferred to accredited sanctuaries, but Haddix falsely claimed that one, Tonka, had died. In reality, she had hidden him in a basement cage, deprived of sunlight, companionship, and proper care.

As revealed in Chimp Crazy, Haddix repeatedly violated court orders, leaked confidential transfer details, and even entered chimp enclosures without permission. Her conduct triggered multiple contempt motions, culminating in federal charges. Adding to the scandal, authorities later found another live chimpanzee hidden in her home, breaking a consent agreement banning her from ever possessing primates.

Thanks to PETA’s persistence, Tonka and other rescued chimpanzees now live in sanctuaries, free to roam, climb, and socialise with their own kind. Yet across the U.S., fewer than 60 chimpanzees remain trapped in roadside zoos, private compounds, and the exotic “pet” trade.

This case is a stark reminder that wild animals are not props or pets—they deserve lives in their natural environments or in sanctuaries, not in basements or cages. If you want to help, Support the Captive Primate Safety Act, avoid venues that exploit animals, and choose entertainment that doesn’t profit from their suffering. Every voice matters when it comes to ending wildlife exploitation.
