France is getting serious about clean air for kids. Starting July 1, smoking will be banned in all outdoor areas where children might be present—think beaches, parks, gardens, bus stops, school entrances, and sports venues. This sweeping measure was announced by French health and family minister Catherine Vautrin, who told Ouest-France that “tobacco must disappear where there are children.”

According to the BBC’s Laura Gozzi, violators will face a fine of €135 (about $153). While smokers can still light up in bar terraces, Vautrin emphasized that public health must come first. “The freedom to smoke must end where the freedom of children to breathe fresh air begins,” she said.

Though electronic cigarettes are not yet part of the ban, restrictions on nicotine levels in e-cigarettes are in the works. France has seen its daily smoking rates fall to 23.1%, the lowest ever, according to the French Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction. That’s more than a 5% drop since 2014.

This move builds on years of local action—over 1,500 municipalities already ban smoking in certain public spaces, and many beaches have long been smoke-free. The national rollout was delayed last year when the necessary decree wasn’t adopted, but public Support is strong. A report by La Ligue Contre le Cancer found that nearly 80% of French citizens want to ban smoking in public spaces like forests, parks, and beaches.

It’s a breath of fresh air—literally—for children and the planet. Cigarette butts are one of the world’s most common forms of litter, leaching toxic chemicals into soil and water. If France can kick the habit in its public spaces, maybe it’s time we all rethink our tolerance for toxic air.

If you care about clean air, kids’ health, and ending preventable animal and environmental harm, Support similar bans where you live. Clean lungs and clean beaches are worth fighting for.
