At least four people who were at the first night of the Republican National Convention meeting in Charlotte, North Carolina, tested positive for COVID-19, according to county officials.
Two attendees and two other “individuals supporting the event” tested positive and were immediately isolated.
A Republican spokesperson told ABC News testing was required before traveling to Charlotte and, upon arrival, contact tracing protocols were followed. Temperatures of attendees were taken every day as well as daily wellness questionnaires. Over 300 delegates from around the country traveled to the convention.
While wearing masks and social distancing were encouraged, these procedures were not enforced and most attendees were reported being seen without masks.
Other nights of the RNC also showed no enforcement of preventive measures. On the final night, President Trump accepted his party’s nomination on the White House lawn in front of tightly packed crowd of 1,500 attendees. Videos and images showed no social distancing efforts and very few attendees wearing masks. CNN’s Dr. Sanjay Gupta commented on the event, saying it is highly likely that people will get COVID-19 from Trump’s RNC event.

This is not the only Trump event that has been linked to positive cases of coronavirus. In June, Trump held a rally in Tulsa that public health experts say contributed to a rise in cases in the city. At least eight Trump campaign advance staffers in Tulsa, two of whom attended the rally, also tested positive for the virus.
