Life in a shelter can be a very difficult experience for a dog. Just imagine being brought to a place filled with hundreds of other dogs who are anxious, and unsure of why or how long they will be in this place. For a small puppy, this is understandably scary and overwhelming. For Ramsey and Fonzie, the shelter experience was made even worse thanks to mange. Mange is a skin infection that causes the fur to fall off and leaves the dog’s skin brittle and very sensitive. This sort of infection is treatable, but it requires a lot of care and attention which, sadly, a busy shelter might not be able to attend to.

Luckily for Ramsey and Fonzie, the shelter they were brought into works with Mazie’s Mission Rescue Clinic. As part of Mazie’s Bridge program, rescuers were able to arrange for these two little ragamuffins to be brought into a foster home for care. Once they were given the all-clear for mange, the pair could join in an adoption day with one of Mazie’s partner organizations. This is their story.

Fonzie is a Papillon mix and Ramsey is a Dachshund mix – although it’s a bit difficult to tell from their missing fur.

Ramsey’s case of mange was way worse than Fonzie’s. His kind foster parents had to wash them every other day with special medicine.

We can’t imagine this was an enjoyable experience for these two pups, but they look pretty adorable nonetheless.

It is important to make sure the sensitive skin is protected; the best way to ensure this is by playing dress up!

Fonzie looks pretty amazing in his “protective” outfit.

While getting better was serious business for these two, they were sure to take breaks to play with their foster siblings.

After two-weeks the fur on Fonzie’s paws had already grown back!

With a little love and time, Ramsey’s fur made a full comeback. Can you believe this is the same dog?!

Soon these two handsome little devils were all ready for adoption days!

The Humane Society of Flower Mound agreed to bring these two pups into their Love on Wheels program that takes dogs from overpopulated areas and brings them to New York, where they’re more likely to be adopted.

While saying goodbye to their foster family was a little sad, these two special guys are now in the care of Helping Hounds and all set to be adopted into a wonderful, forever home!

Thanks to the wonderful people who helped these two pooches go from fur-less and scared to beautiful and happy, we’re sure they’ll find a great new home in no time!
