When Denise Joseph lost her job at the Department of Education, she wasn’t sure what to do next. But two puppies named Wren and Wrigley gave her a new sense of purpose. According to The Washington Post’s Kyle Melnick, Joseph is one of several former federal employees now fostering animals through Lucky Dog Animal Rescue in Arlington, Virginia.

The rescue group launched a special initiative to Support fired government workers who take in foster pets. They’re offering free pet food, toys, leashes, and even crates to help ease the transition — all provided with no cost to the fosterers other than “time and love,” says Lucky Dog’s CEO, Mirah Horowitz. The program kicked off after mass layoffs tied to President Trump’s executive orders, which also included cuts to diversity, equity, and inclusion programs.

These volunteers, many of whom were dedicated public servants, are now using their time to care for animals in need. For some, like Donna Davis — who fostered a rambunctious Rottweiler-shepherd mix named King — the bond has been so strong she’s thinking of adopting him permanently.

Even those who left government voluntarily, like former attorney adviser Mollie Kolaitis, have found meaning in fostering. Kolaitis has cared for nine kittens and a Chihuahua with her pups since accepting a buyout. She says helping animals is “something nice to pour yourself into… when it doesn’t feel like there is a lot.”

In a world that too often undervalues both people and animals, stories like these show the power of compassion. Fostering animals doesn’t just save their lives — it gives humans a reason to hope.

Thinking of fostering? Now’s the time to step up. Rescues everywhere need Support. Open your heart and home — and help change a life.
