A new study is highlighting the powerful connection between gut health and mental well-being—this time pointing to fermented foods like kimchi, miso, and yogurt (we recommend dairy-free coconut yogurt!) as unexpected mood-boosters. According to a recent Yahoo article by Andi Breitowich, researchers have found that probiotics in fermented foods could play a big role in reducing symptoms of anxiety and depression by positively influencing gut bacteria.
The study, published in EMBO Molecular Medicine, shows that probiotics found in fermented foods can regulate neurotransmitters like GABA, which help manage stress and emotional responses. The probiotics also reduce inflammation and calm activity in the amygdala—a part of the brain involved in fear and emotion processing.
Experts like Dr. Michael Genovese, chief medical advisor at Ascendent New York, explain that fermented foods can Support brain function by introducing beneficial microbes that promote a healthy gut barrier and lower inflammation. These microbes also help create neurotransmitter precursors, which are crucial for emotional stability.
But not all fermented foods are equally effective. Pasteurized products or alcoholic fermented drinks like beer and wine won’t deliver the same benefits. Instead, look for options labeled with “live and active cultures.” Some of the best plant-based sources include kimchi, sauerkraut, miso, and tempeh.
While this isn’t a replacement for traditional mental health treatment, it’s one more reason to ditch ultra-processed food and embrace a gut-friendly diet that’s good for both the mind and the planet.
If you haven’t already, consider adding a daily spoonful of kimchi, a bowl of miso soup, or some probiotic-packed tempeh to your meals. It’s a small step with the potential to make you feel better—while also supporting a plant-forward, compassionate way of living.
