Charlotte Dujardin, one of Team GB’s most celebrated equestrians, has been banned from the upcoming Paris Olympics following serious allegations of horse mistreatment. The 39-year-old, known for her six Olympic medals in dressage, is facing suspension due to a controversial video from a coaching session.
The video, recorded several years ago, shows Dujardin allegedly whipping a horse 24 times in a minute during a private training session. Stephan Wensing, a Dutch lawyer representing the complainant, a 19-year-old student present at the session, praised the International Federation for Equestrian Sports (FEI) for their decisive action. The incident took place in an arena where Dujardin reportedly instructed the young rider about horse movement, leading to the alleged excessive whipping.
British Equestrian and the FEI have expressed their commitment to investigating the matter thoroughly. Jim Eyre, British Equestrian’s chief executive, emphasized the importance of upholding equine welfare and maintaining the sport’s integrity. Dujardin’s suspension means she will not compete in Paris, missing a significant opportunity to add to her medal tally. She has acknowledged her wrongdoing, expressing deep regret and shame for her actions.
In a statement, Dujardin admitted her behavior was inexcusable, though not reflective of her usual training methods. She apologized to Team GB, her supporters, and sponsors, pledging full cooperation with ongoing investigations.
The FEI confirmed her suspension, stressing the importance of addressing any form of abuse to protect equine welfare. This case has highlighted the need for vigilance and accountability within the sport.
Dujardin’s withdrawal has prompted Team GB to call in reserve rider Becky Moody, who will now compete alongside Carl Hester and Charlotte Fry. The British Olympic Association is working to ensure a seamless transition under the IOC’s athlete replacement rules.
