The US Environmental Protection Agency says it is restarting a long delayed effort to dramatically reduce animals testing and replace it with safer and more modern science. According to EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin, the agency is recommitting to a goal first set years ago to eliminate most mammalian testing by 2035.

This shift matters because millions of animals have long been used in chemical safety tests. Rabbits, mice, rats, and dogs are often subjected to painful experiments even when results do not reliably predict human outcomes. For people who care about animals and science, this move signals progress that respects both ethics and evidence.

According to the EPA Press Office, the agency will now prioritize new approach methods that do not rely on live animals. These tools include lab based cell tests, computer models, and other techniques that can better reflect how chemicals affect human health. In many cases, these methods are faster, more consistent, and more relevant than traditional testing on animals.

Importantly, the EPA has already taken steps that show this policy is more than talk. The agency recently used non animal methods in cancer risk reviews for common chemicals, sparing an estimated sixteen hundred animals. It also launched its first ever lab animal adoption program, helping former research animals find homes as pets rather than remaining in facilities.

Supporters say this approach benefits people and the planet at the same time. Reducing animal testing aligns with a growing movement toward science that protects wildlife while improving public health. It also supports a healthier environment by speeding up chemical reviews and reducing waste from outdated testing practices.

There is still work to do. Some testing is required by law, and change takes time. Even so, the direction is clear. Science is evolving, and policy is finally catching up.

Choosing compassion in research reflects broader values about how we treat life on Earth. Supporting plant based choices and humane science is one way to protect animals, strengthen our environment, and build a healthier future for everyone. Let’s keep pushing for progress that leaves fewer beings behind.
