This Dog Was Dumped in a Cardboard Box With 4 Broken Legs – But She Refuses to Stop Loving

Author Bio

I am a writer and illustrator living in Poland.

The Butler County animal rescue Joseph’s Legacy recently saved a sweet elderly dog who has seen untold pain and suffering in her life. The rescue was called by the Middletown Police who had just found a Pomeranian inside a cardboard box at an abandoned condo. The team quickly stepped in to take the animal, but neglect and abandonment were not all that had happened to the little dog – all four of her legs were broken, most likely from severe arthritis.

The dog was found in a seriously poor state. Meg Melampy, who runs the rescue, found that on top of the leg injuries, the dog’s nails were overgrown, her fur was dirty, and her teeth were in very bad condition.

The beautiful little Pomeranian got a new name – Pumpkin. She turned out to be about 13 years old.

Once the X-rays were done, it was discovered that one of Pumpkin’s front legs was completely detached and it would need to be amputated. Several of her teeth would also have to be removed so that she could be more comfortable.

She was started on steroids and embarked immediately on her long road to recovery. Soon, she also got a makeover – a haircut and a bath – and found a foster family who completely fell in love with her!

In spite of all she had gone through, Pumpkin is an incredibly sweet little dog. “It’s just pitiful,” Melampy told Fox19 about Pumpkin and her ordeal. “I mean it just breaks my heart, and every time I see something like that it just reaffirms why we do this every day.” She hopes to pursue criminal charges against the person who neglected Pumpkin so severely and abandoned her in such terrible condition.

The rescue is now taking donations for Pumpkin’s medical care. You can make a donation to help her here!

  1. I have had a fondness for Pons ever since I found one of Hwy. 17 in Ontario. It turned to he had people but they never called which I am most grateful for. I loved that dog. How can anyone do something like this to someone so vulnerable? I am so glad Pumpkin was found and now has people who actually care about her. If she was with me she would be spoiled rotten ( like my other two dogs are).
