DC League of Super-Pets Inspired by Director’s Experience Volunteering at a Shelter for Old and Disabled Animals

The new DC League of Super-Pets movie set to hit theaters soon was actually inspired by a pet shelter of older disabled animals.

The new animated film, DC League of Super-Pets, is set in the DC Comics universe and was directed by Jared Stern. Stern told Newsweek that he was volunteering at a pet shelter in LA when he got the inspiration for the movie.

“While I was there, I was looking at these pets, these cute kittens in the front that were very likely to get adopted. And then in the back, were some older animals, disabled animals, who kind of lived at the shelter,” Stern told Newsweek.

He felt bad and wanted them to get adopted too. “I thought, ‘what if they got superpowers?’ So that was sort of the emotional genesis.”

That’s when Stern and co-writer John Whittington decided to write the script for the movie. The movie will follow these superhero pets, all looking for someone to adopt them. Stern hopes that the movie will inspire families to adopt and not shop.

“At the very end of the end credits, the last words that you see are ‘Be a hero adopt a pet,'” he said.

They have been doing promotions for the movie, including events with rescues around the world. Warner Bros has teamed up with Best Friends, an animal charity, to help call attention to local animal shelters across the country.

The movie will premiere in theaters on July 29, 2022.
