In an incredible display of determination and instinct, Cooper, a golden retriever, spent 27 days walking 40 miles back to his old home after escaping from his new humans in Dungannon, County Tyrone. Cooper had been adopted by Nigel Fleming, a devoted dog lover who rescued the dog from a kennel after his previous humans had to give him up. However, upon arriving at his new home, Cooper leaped out of the car and embarked on a remarkable journey back to his old home in Tobermore, County Londonderry.
Cooper’s new human, Nigel, initially lost him just as they arrived at their home. He tried to chase after him, but Cooper disappeared quickly, prompting a desperate search. Throughout his incredible journey, Cooper navigated main roads, country lanes, fields, and forests, mostly at night, without any human assistance or knowledge of his whereabouts.
Meanwhile, Nigel adopted Cooper as a companion for his other golden retriever, Molly. Although he would have loved to adopt Cooper’s brother, George, as well, he felt that three dogs would be too much to handle. As people searched for Cooper every day, the dog persevered in his journey, eventually making his way back to his old home.
Upon Cooper’s return, Nigel expressed relief and happiness that his new dog was home safe. He is now focused on helping Cooper regain his strength by providing him with small meals to slowly build up his weight. Reflecting on Cooper’s unbelievable journey, Nigel stated, “In the end, all we had to do was follow a dog’s nose home to familiar surroundings.”
Lost Paws Northern Ireland, a charity that played a role in Cooper’s rescue, is delighted with the outcome. A spokesperson for the organization praised Nigel as “one of the most dedicated owners” they have had the pleasure of meeting. They also reported that Cooper is now settling in well at his new home, enjoying home comforts and bonding with his new family.
Cooper’s extraordinary journey is a testament to the resilience, determination, and instincts of dogs, and his story will undoubtedly inspire awe and admiration for generations to come.
