The Mississippi River, one of America’s most iconic waterways, has just been named the most endangered river in the United States by the nonprofit American Rivers. This year’s annual list puts the spotlight on a river that provides drinking water to 20 million people, supports over 800 species, and plays a vital role in agriculture, transportation, and recreation.
But this lifeline is facing serious threats. From worsening flooding to Pollution caused by industrial farming, the health of the river is declining fast. According to Whitney Clark of Friends of the Mississippi River, “all that water flowing off of our agricultural landscapes is carrying pollutants… sediment, nutrients”—a toxic combo that harms both people and wildlife.
One major concern is farm drainage systems that quickly flush water (and everything in it) off fields and into the river. While it helps crops grow, it also increases erosion and runoff. Fortunately, there are solutions. The University of Minnesota’s Forever Green Initiative is developing crops like winter oilseeds that grow year-round, helping keep soil in place and nutrients out of the water. These crops could also be used as sustainable fuel—an environmental win-win.
There are other dangers, too. Aging dams and a proposed underground mine in Aitkin County raise alarms about structural and environmental risks to the Mississippi and surrounding watersheds. Add in government inaction and budget cuts, and the situation becomes even more urgent.
Protecting rivers like the Mississippi isn’t just about water—it’s about wildlife, people, and future generations. Support sustainable farming, eat plant-based, and speak up for Conservation. A healthy river helps everyone—from otters and herons to farmers and families.
