Anja Windl, known as “Climate Shakira” online, has become a leading figure in Austria’s climate activism scene. As a member of the Last Generation climate movement, she’s been raising awareness about the need for an effective climate protection law in Austria. Despite facing possible deportation and increased scrutiny from authorities, Windl remains determined to make a difference.

A German-born Bavarian activist, Windl has earned her nickname “Climate Shakira” due to her resemblance to the famous singer. She’s known for her daring stunts, such as gluing herself to Austrian roads to protest the lack of progress on climate legislation. These acts have garnered her a significant following on TikTok, where she shares her activism with the world.
Austrian authorities have taken a hard stance against so-called “climate stickers” like Windl. They’re even demanding prison sentences for protesters who bring traffic to a halt by gluing themselves to roads. Windl herself is facing potential deportation due to her activism. Nevertheless, she remains undeterred, announcing plans for three weeks of roadblocks at major traffic intersections in Vienna in May.
So, what are the “climate stickers” fighting for? They want an effective climate protection law for Austria. Politicians have been negotiating a new law to regulate CO2 limits in the country for over 800 days, ever since a previous law expired in 2020. Austrian Environment Minister Leonore Gewessler is strongly in favor of a quick decision, saying that if she could pass the law on her own, it would already be done. However, she needs a parliamentary majority to make it happen.
As Windl’s story gains international attention, she’s even launched a tongue-in-cheek social media campaign to find an Austrian husband and “escape deportation.” While her approach may be lighthearted, her cause is serious, and she’s dedicated to fighting for a more sustainable future.
Let’s Support “Climate Shakira” and her fellow activists by raising awareness about the importance of climate legislation.
