A new food recall is alerting families across the U.S. to potential lead contamination in a popular kitchen staple: ground cinnamon. According to Newsweek, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced that Durra Ground Cinnamon, sold by Eureka Inc. of Pomona, California, “has the potential to be contaminated with lead.” The product was distributed in grocery stores across California and Michigan between August 24 and October 6.

Lead is a toxic heavy metal that can cause serious health issues when ingested, particularly among children. The FDA warns that long-term exposure can lead to neurological damage, learning difficulties, and developmental problems in young children. In adults, it may trigger abdominal pain, kidney dysfunction, and hypertension. Although no illnesses have been reported so far, the FDA recommends that consumers immediately discard the recalled spice and seek medical advice if they suspect exposure.

The recall was triggered after the FDA discovered elevated lead levels during testing. The affected products, labeled “Best by May 2026,” are identified by UPC 6251136 034139 and Batch No. 06 B:02. Consumers can return the cinnamon to the place of purchase for a full refund or contact Eureka Inc. for more information.

Lead exposure remains one of the most preventable environmental hazards, yet it continues to surface in food and consumer goods. Spices, particularly imported varieties, have been found to contain unsafe lead levels in past FDA investigations — an alarming reminder that stronger oversight of our food supply chain is still needed to protect both people and the environment.

Let’s make safer, plant-based food choices and continue supporting regulations that protect families, children, and the planet from toxic contamination.
